These folds provide the paper with load bearing, qualities. Under compression, the weight is distributed through each fold. It's absorbs the weight. This will be tested with other fabrics, like felt.
The CAD software generates repetitive forms in seconds but other forms can best be achieved by hand. We are trying to make forms that are exclusive to one or other of these processes.
The laser cutter uses vector graphics to cut, etch or mark the paper surface. These origami experiments use CAD functions, such as duplicate array, to create precise folds of increasing size.
The laser cutter can also be used to mark, or score, the surface of a material. This means that a single surface can be deformed in addition to cut.
I was fortunate to attend a 3D scanning project at the BBK Kulturwerk this week. The sannner is capable of creating a digital model of a physical object. The digital scan could be used to create facsimilies on the 3D printer.
This week I attended my first day at the Fab Lab in Berlin. I'll be there during September working on a series of laser cutting exercises.
